Gravity Falls: Journal 3 is a physical book released by Disney Press on July 26, 2016, written by Alex Hirsch and Rob Renzetti, ISBN 978-1484746691. It is a direct object-to-object translation of the show: the journals the twins spend forty episodes finding become a real notebook you can hold. It is the first of the three-title print line and the entry point for the two books that followed.

What it is, mechanically
Journal 3 is written as Dipper and Mabel's own field notes. Rather than retelling the series, it fills in gaps the episodes left open and adds material set between episodes. Because it is a prop, its design decisions carry meaning inside the fiction: it is a battered three-ring binder with a broken clasp, because Dipper found it abandoned in the woods, and every page is written in the twins' handwriting with margin notes, crossed-out mistakes, and arguments between them.
The most important structural feature is that the book is a codex. Pages are keyed to the three numbered journals, and the marginalia is not decoration; the handwriting, the placement of sketches, and the fact that certain pages are torn out all carry plot information. Reading it as a straight illustrated novel misses the point of why the twins keep it locked and argued over.
The black-light special edition
A special edition released on June 13, 2017 and limited to 10,000 copies added black-light ink across the pages, a leather-textured cover with metallic pieces, a physical magnifying glass, removable photographs and notes, and a signature from Alex Hirsch. The edition sold out, and it is now a collector's item rather than an in-print title. If you are buying a copy used, the small parts are exactly what counterfeit listings get wrong: the magnification lens, the metal cover fittings, and the removable inserts are what distinguish the real special edition from a reprint of the standard book.
Reception and why it mattered
Journal 3 was a number-one New York Times bestseller and stayed on the list for 47 weeks. That commercial result is the reason the franchise got a second and third book at all, and it is a useful data point for understanding how unusual the show was as a property: a children's cartoon about hidden codes produced a best-selling physical artefact that buyers treat as a puzzle.
Reading order
Journal 3 is first and should be read first. It is followed by Lost Legends, a 2018 graphic novel that continues from it, and then by The Book of Bill, which is a different kind of book entirely: it is an adult-audience novel told by the antagonist, and it extends before and after the events of the series rather than continuing the twins' story.
