The Pines twins

Dipper Pines, voiced by Jason Ritter, is a 12-year-old twin brother and the show's straight man to his sister's antics. Dipper is named for the pine-tree emblem on his hat, and the hat, plus the journal he finds, are the objects that make him the viewpoint character. Jason Ritter has said that when he read the finale script he understood it was a series finale, not a season finale, which reflects how deliberately the last stretch was written.

Mabel Pines, voiced by Kristen Schaal, is Dipper's 12-year-old twin sister, hyperactive and fun-loving, and the engine of the show's comedy. She is modelled on Hirsch's own twin sister, Ariel Hirsch, and she is frequently the character who acts first and reasons afterwards.

The Pines family in Gravity Falls

Grunkle Stan, also Stanford Pines or Stanley Pines, is voiced by Alex Hirsch. He is the twins' great-uncle, the owner and manager of the Mystery Shack, and grumpy, greedy, and deeply loving in roughly that order. He was inspired by Hirsch's grandfather Stan, who according to Hirsch told tall tales and messed with the kids to get a rise out of them. In-universe, Stan carries a fez whose symbol marks his membership in the Royal Order of the Holy Mackerel; that symbol was edited between broadcast and Disney+ release, then later restored, which is a small but telling example of the show's transmission history.

Stanford Pines is Stan's six-fingered, long-lost identical twin brother, voiced by J. K. Simmons in season two, and the author of the journals the twins spend the series finding. "A Tale of Two Stans" is the season-two episode that establishes his backstory.

The Mystery Shack

Wendy Corduroy, voiced by Linda Cardellini, is a 15-year-old tomboyish part-time cashier at the Mystery Shack and Dipper's unrequited crush. She is also the show's most reliable narrator of how strange the town actually is.

Soos Ramirez, also known as Jesus "Soos" Ramirez, is voiced by Alex Hirsch. He is 22, the Shack's handyman, and Dipper and Mabel's closest friend in town. Soos carries a disproportionate share of the show's warmth and a lot of its biggest moments.

The antagonist

Bill Cipher is voiced by Alex Hirsch. He is an interdimensional demon who can be summoned and released into a person's mind, drawn as a one-eyed yellow triangle with a top hat and bow tie, superficially like the Eye of Providence. Recurring townspeople

The show builds a large supporting cast of Gravity Falls residents, each attached to a specific corner of town life. Among the most frequently used are Pacifica Northwest, Stanford's former student and Dipper's season-two foil; Gideon Gleeful, the TV magician who sets up shop across from the Mystery Shack and becomes a direct competitor; Lazy Susan, proprietor of the town's convenience store; Old Man McGucket, the derelict scientist tied to the show's biggest backstory; andTY Bob, who works at the town's diner. Cabbie, led by Larry, Rob's younger brother, the Shapeshifter, and Blendin Blandin fill out the weirdness of the town with a mix of supernatural and mundane.
